New Resident Evil Movie to Be Completely Different from Previous Films, Promises Director Zach Cregger

Resident Evil

Director Zach Cregger has reassured fans of the Resident Evil series that the new film coming next year will be more faithful to the video games and will be different from anything released before.

For those who don’t know, after the film series starring Milla Jovovich, the Resident Evil film adaptations will start a new saga with a reboot film set to release on September 18th, 2026. The project will be directed by Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian, with a joint effort from Costantin Film (the company that holds the film rights) and PlayStation Productions.

Cregger wants to move away from the style of the previous film series, which used the video games as a base but introduced an original protagonist and stories that focused more on action than horror. Instead, the director aims to create a film that perfectly represents the tension and constant sense of danger felt in the video games.

During a presentation at CinemaCon, Cregger said:

There’s a moment that comes in almost every Resident Evil game where you find yourself in a dark passageway, your health is almost zero and there’s no way around. You have to go through but you know there’s something awful for you in the darkness.

He added:

That is a thrill that the Resident Evil games have perfected. My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.

The new Resident Evil movie will release on September 18th, 2026
