CEO of Striking Distance Studios, Glen Schofield just showed off some brand new gameplay footage of the upcoming sci-fi survival horror title The Callisto Protocol at Gamescom 2022. After previously revealing some new gameplay back in June at Summer Game Fest 2022, Schofield took to the Gamescom stage to present entirely new footage of the grisly horror game in action.
The new footage shows off two distinct new areas not seen before. The first is a dark industrial area that looks to be some kind of processing plant, populated with spinning spiked cylinders. The gameplay in this section is very reminiscent of the stealth system seen in games like The Last of Us and follows protagonist Jacob Lee as he sneaks around and performs stealth kills on various enemy types. One notable new enemy feature is what Schofield calls the “Mutations” system, where tentacles sprout out from enemies, and if they’re not taken down quickly enough, the enemy will mutate into a faster, stronger, and meaner version of itself. The footage also showed Jacob picking enemies up using his “kinesis” device and then hurling them into the spiked cylinders, grinding them up into a bloody mist.
The other gameplay section shown in the video sees Jacob sliding down an enormous pipe after it’s been flooded with water. As he struggles to stay afloat, he must also avoid obstacles in his path, like floor-to-ceiling beams and giant blades of spinning fans. The trailer ends with Jacob not quite making it through one of those blades in time, and he’s brutally sliced in half.
We can’t wait for this one to drop. The gameplay and story look like everything you’d want from the spiritual successor to Dead Space.
The Callisto Protocol will release on December 2, 2022, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Pre-orders for the GameStop Exclusive Collector’s Edition Bundle are still available here.
