Following the full reveal of Netflix’s Resident Evil, there’s been a lot of confusion and curiosity as to how much ‘Resident Evil‘ there is in this ‘Resident Evil‘ show — especially given the showrunner’s bizarre and seemingly conflicting comments regarding how the show will be including the lore from the games universe. There isn’t much else at the moment, just the two trailers released a few days ago and the interviews that have fans theorizing about what this show’s actual deal is — but a new teaser for Netflix’s Geeked Week seems to give us a look at how game lore may be being included in the show.
If you’re unfamiliar, Geeked Week is a sort of E3-esque series of streams that take place between June 6th and 10th that showcase new trailers, announcements, and more for Netflix and Netflix adjacent content. Over on the official Twitter, a brief showcase teaser gave some brief glimpses at upcoming shows, such as Stranger Things season 4, Sandman, and of course, Resident Evil. In amongst trailer footage we’ve already seen, one all-new shot stands out amongst the rest:
Yep, there’s no bones about it. Unless one of Netflix’s other horror shows is giving RE a direct shout-out, that is Resident Evil 4‘s Dr. Salvador appearing in the upcoming series. Dr. Salvador (or simply Chainsaw Man if you’re boring) is probably RE4‘s most iconic enemy, appearing in tons of the game’s marketing and having become something of a staple of Resident Evil bestiary having gone on to influence enemies in most of the games that followed. While vaguely referenced (without context and no effort at all to replicate his look) in a scene from Resident Evil: Retribution, this take is very nearly 100% game accurate (seemingly inspired by the NECA action figure color pallet), complete with his iconic yellow chainsaw.
There’s still no way of knowing how Dr. Salvador will be used in the context of the show, of course — the setting looks like some sort of cage match, surrounded by a cheering (however hard to make out) crowd. While Los Pueblos is still a quarantine zone with Ganado roaming freely behind sealed-off barricades (as per 2016’s Umbrella Corps), I’m going to assume that this show won’t be cutting quite that deep, and this might be something appearing in the ‘post apocalypse’ timeline in the show. There’s literally no way to know at the moment, though, and we probably won’t find out until the series releases July 14th.
