British game studio The Chinese Room, best known for developing Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther, has just announced their new first-person narrative horror title STILL WAKES THE DEEP at the recent Xbox Gaming Showcase.
The trailer shows footage of an off-shore oil rig amidst a foggy seascape. We then see the protagonist make his way through the station, solving puzzles along the way, alongside some traversal action, all accompanied by a very eerie female singing voice.
Other than its moody atmosphere, the trailer doesn’t give a whole lot of information about the game, however, its official description provides the following details:
In STILL WAKES THE DEEP, you are an off-shore oil rig worker, fighting for his life through a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters. All lines of communication have been severed. All exits are gone. All that remains is to face the unknowable horror that’s come aboard.
Search for your crew and help them survive if you can. Run, climb, and swim through the flooding corridors and storm-lashed outer decks. Face a terrifying, unrelenting foe. And pray that, one day, you get to see your family again.
We have an eerie feeling there might just be some H.P. Lovecraft threads woven into story.
The exact release date for Still Wakes The Deep has not been announced but it’s expected to release on PC and consoles in early 2024 and will also be available on Xbox Series S|X via Game Pass.
