I’ve always had a special affinity for Creepypastas, even before I knew what they were called. Stories of haunted game cartridges or .exe files (which can be scary enough without being haunted) are just so delightful, even if they are just plain weird. It’s fun to think about the developers pulling a fast one on the unsuspecting public, even if that fast one was horrifying and terrible. Even better is when these stories take a turn for the absurd, like Sonic.exe.
Whether you could call The Uncle who Works for Nintendo a Creepypasta game or not, it’s still worth sharing. It’s a text-based adventure that invites you over to that friend’s house, so he (or she) can regale you in all of the cool stuff that their awesome relative told them about the next Mario or Sonic game. Or the next Mario AND Sonic title.
The Uncle who Works for Nintendo, while being pretty slow-going at first, does take a major turn for the absurd.. Depending on how well you and your friend get along and how much you like to go to the bathroom or eat, it’s a normal evening with an horrific twist or is quickly turned on its head by some pretty indescribable weirdness. Not to spoil it, but the game plays with your character’s memory and makes you wonder why you are friends with this person at all.
Seriously, kids are the worst.
There are different story paths to take and unlockable endings. The game is a free to play browser title and was a little more unsettling than I’d imagined, particularly with the unusual choice of abstract art used. If you have a half an hour or so to spare, give it a shot!
