Mr. Scratch is the main antagonist of Alan Wake’s American Nightmare (set to hit Xbox Live Arcade February 22nd). He was met towards the end of the original game and had taken on the form of Wake, who was to meet Alan’s friends while he was trapped in the Dark Place. His name is Mr. Scratch since his actual name comes out as scratching noises. There was an uncertainty of his role in the game’s universe as he originated from the Dark Place–which suggested there was nothing good about him.
It turns out that Mr. Scratch is a rather sick psychotic killer who is now under Wake’s guise, traveling across the US leaving a trail of bodies in his wake (pun unintended). He’s making his way to Alice, Alan’s wife, for the grand finale of his murdering spree. The reasons why Mr. Scratch wants to see Alan suffer so much isn’t quite certain, but boy does he seem to love his job. He toys around with his victim, prancing and dancing around with a knife in the trailer.
Alan Wake’s American Nightmare uses a live-action style for a good number of its cutscenes, which you can see in demonstration below. The song in the trailer is confirmed via the game’s director Sam Lake’s twitter to be titled, “The Happy Song,” composed by Poets of the Fall.
