Metroid Fusion will be coming to current 3DS owners for free, amongst other titles later this year

Talk about a total shocker. Overnight, Nintendo announced a drastic price-cut for the, currently struggling, 3DS. The glasses-free 3D handheld launched at $249.99 and has been seeing difficulties trying to follow the success of Nintendo’s previous handheld, the DS, at that price tag. In comes this price drop, which will start on August 12, slashing the handheld’s price down to $169.99. Yeah, now nobody can really complain about a high price tag and be justified in doing so, taking all the 3DS’ features into account.

But that’s not all. And yes, I know what some of you may be thinking: What about all of us who already own a 3DS? Well, Nintendo has an answer for current owners. That answer can simplified into two words: free games. Twenty to be exact.

If you currently own a 3DS, or are planning to get one before August 12 for some reason, and if you connect to the platform’s eShop service before August 11 comes to a close then you’ll automatically be a part of the “Nintendo 3DS Ambassador” program. Being an “ambassador” will grant you 20 free game downloads from the 3DS’ virtual console which will be expanded to include NES (as previously announced) and GBA games (as has been constantly demanded).

You’ll have 10 NES games available to “ambassadors” for free, with a line-up including: The Legend of Zelda, Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong Jr., Super Mario Bros., and Ice Climbers. These NES games will be available for free on September 1st for “ambassadors,” and it’ll be available to everyone else later this year. Then you have the remaining 10 free games, consisting of GBA titles which include: Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, WarioWare Inc. Mega Microgames, Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Metroid Fusion. As opposed to the NES downloads, the GBA line-up will be entirely exclusive to “ambassadors” with Nintendo currently having no plans to bring those games out for anyone outside of this program.

So, how excited are you about this? Are you already a 3DS owner? Am I the only one who can’t help but feel worried for Nintendo regarding this price drop (which was sprouted by the 3DS’ struggling sales)? Sound off in the comments below.
