Metro: Exodus Delayed Into 2019

Metro: Exodus

The Metro series has always existed somewhere between pure horror survival and shooter-FPS. When Metro: Exodus was revealed last year during Microsoft’s E3 conference, it made had a stellar showing. With a beautiful graphics engine and a more open-ended approach to its level design, it seems like Metro: Exodus might be the game that will bring this niche series into the spotlight.

Unfortunately, fans of the post-apocalyptic series will have to wait just a bit longer than originally anticipated for the game to release. Developer A4 announced today via Metro’s Official Twitter that Metro: Exodus will be pushed from it’s expected Q4 2018 release to Q1 of 2019. Bummer.

There hasn’t been any reason given for the push, but it’s expected that we will hear more about Exodus in just a few weeks at E3 2018. Microsoft’s big push behind the game last year pretty much guarantees some kind of presence, and with Microsoft’s distinct lack of console exclusives I’m going to assume another stage demo is coming for Exodus.

In many ways, the push makes sense. With such a large emphasis on Metro as a major AAA franchise coming with Exodus and THQ Nordic looking to get more franchise cache under their belt, they and developer A4 are going to do everything they can to make Metro: Exodus shine. The delay also puts the game in something of an “early year sweet spot”; the last few years have seen games such as Monster Hunter: World and Far Cry Primal capitalize on a lack of big releases early in the year. Moving the release also gets the game out of the path of some of the biggest games of the year, including heavy hitters like Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-Man, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and tentatively Kingdom Hearts III. People may have to wait a little longer, but this seems like a win-win in the long run.
