The Castlevania series is in quite an interesting situation. With MercurySteam being done with the beloved franchise after the recent release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, all eyes were on Koji Igarashi to return and deliver the next game, going back to the original timeline. That won’t be the case anymore.
As of March15th, Koji Igarashi is no longer with Konami. He’s parted ways with them after more than 20 years. His departure has opened a new door for him, one that will see him starting his own independent studio. It’s a move not unlike the one Keiji Inafune took when he officially left Capcom. Perhaps we’ll also see Iga put out a new game that serves as a spiritual successor to the franchise he’s been such an integral part of before, like Inafune is doing with Mighty No. 9.
Ever since he worked on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, as Assistant Director and Programmer, Iga has gone on to work on more than a dozen Castlevania games. Though he’s faced his share of criticisms, with many irked by his habit of re-using assets for the handheld games (which were all great), the developer had become synonymous with the franchise and beloved by fans. So the question now is: What’s next for Castlevania?
I’ll be offering my thoughts on the series’ future and where I think it should go next in an upcoming article. Stay tuned!
