When 2D platformer Limbo hits the Playstation Vita later this year, it will lack touch-screen support, according to Playdead CEO Dino Patti.
Patti said that Playdead didn’t want to make use of the Vita’s touch capabilities because it didn’t feel the game was suited for them. He did however, state that a lot of work had gone into making the port, being made by LittleBigPlanet Vita developer Double Eleven.
Patti said that the Vita port cost more than other ports because so much effort had been put into making it work for the system.
It needs to be perfect for that screen. There are some things that are different for when the screen is smaller we do to make it work better. It would require a lot from us to rethink the game. We would probably make another game if we were going to do that. Vita was a no-brainer because we could keep the same experience. It has all of these great features, but we didn’t have to use them.”
So why bother releasing Limbo for the Vita at all? Patti says that it came about during lengthy discussions with Sony and that ultimately, it was about expanding their market and making a good profit, or at least breaking even. And while Patti said that he hopes old fans of the game will buy and play through it again on the Vita, he concedes that the Vita port isn’t exactly for people who have played the game before, but rather newcomers to the game. So to put it simply, it doesn’t bring a whole lot new to the table, other than to play the game while on the go.
Depending on what the price is, is that really worth it? I mean Limbo was a great game, but play it through once or twice and the draw really seems to wear off. What do you think? Would you pick up the title again for a few bucks?
