The latest entry in Adam Sessler’s The Evil Within interview series sees him jump into the creative process behind the game’s female boss character, Laura. Met early into the game, Laura is a spider-like creature that pursues Sebastian on several occasions. Tango Gameworks’ concept artist, Ikumi Nakamura, discusses the creature’s evolution from initial concept stage to final design.
Laura’s design started out looking much like the Japanese folklore monster that’s depicted as a woman with long dark hair covering her face. We’ve seen this in a lot of Japanese horror, including movies Ringu and Ju-On. To make her even more disturbing, extra limbs, scar tissue, and even shoes were put on her, giving her additional attributes in order to make her scarier, and hint at her personal story.
