The most requested DayZ fix (at least in my circles) is finally being addressed. In this week’s DayZ development blog, Bohemia Interactive has detailed the technology behind the upcoming fix for zombie AI and collision detection. In tech terms, the solution will come in the form of a navigation mesh which will govern how zombie AI is directed around the environment – both indoors and out – in a way that respect boundaries.
Finally, zombies will no longer run through walls and sneak up on us when we should safe indoors! I’ve been waiting a long time for this fix as without it, DayZ‘s crazed zombies are more like supernatural rage ghosts that have an unfair advantage.
While the updated changes to zombies pathfinding is very much appreciated, the talk of work in progress features that are coming to the game in upcoming builds is a tad more exciting. Bohemia’s Bratislava DayZ dev team have been working on the hunting aspect of the game, creating animal models and AI. In one of the screenshots provided, a deer can be seen behind some grass. Fishing, by the use of improvised tackles, and the ability to harvest fish fillets, are also talked about.
In the case of the missing camping feature that was supposed to be added to the game last month, Bohemia states that camping had to be pushed back because its implementation would have hurt the game, not enhance it. Resource collecting in the form of chopping trees, looking for fallen sticks in the forest, gathering rocks, and creating campfire kits are detailed as ways that scavenging and crafting will be implemented into the game.
If the included art is anything to go by, we should be receiving graveyards and a new building type to the game’s map soon. As for the ETA of everything mentioned in the blog, nothing is set in stone, but the team is aiming for a stable update once per month, with experimental updates pushed when the team is completely comfortable with the build.
No mention of Bohemia’s server hack has been mentioned, but there is a nice recap of the game’s progress and speed near the end; definitely go read that, as many are quick to pretend they know the ins and outs of game development when they’re feeling impatient about the game’s progress.
