Since parting ways with Konami last year, Hideo Kojima has become known for his coy refusal to talk about his new studio. He is also gaining a reputation for extending that coquettish silence to Kojima Production’s flagship project, Death Stranding. They announced the game at E3 2016 with a surreal trailer that didn’t give away any details about the plot or characters, while still managing to set the gaming world alight.
Since then, Kojima has slowly released details about Death Stranding, preferring to send them out into the world as riddles and questions. The latest of these is a tweet from Kojima Productions that hints that we may be playing with a female lead.
Death Stranding’s casting is still under way… Will there be a heroine? Who should play her?

This suggests that Kojima has not yet decided on an actress, and it is possible that the female character would be part of the co-op mode he’s been teasing. Kojima has stated that Death Stranding will have a “new form of co-op play” as well as the ability to go it alone. Norman Reedus will definitely remain in the project, and Kojima is happy to show a side of Reedus that fans of television series The Walking Dead might not expect.
Given his latest round of reveals at Tokyo Game Show 2016, fans can also ferret out part of the release date for Death Stranding. During an interview with IGN, Kojima said, “To go a little further, there is a movie called Akira, and it will be out before the year in which Akira is set.” Akira is set in 2019, so we can expect to see Death Stranding released sometime in 2018. That sounds reasonable for a game of this scope and quality, though it does mean we may be in for another two years of slow, sly details from Kojima himself. As long as he gives out details with the sassy attitude he’s displayed thus far, we’re totally game.
Yes, Death Stranding has a set release date. Duh, how else would we be able to set a budget?
