Killing Floor 2 Developer Diary #1: The Zeds (And the info we can glean from it)

Tripwire Interactive has kicked off a series of developer diaries for Killing Floor 2 with a video about the motion capture they’re doing for the Zeds. For those unfamiliar with the series, the Zeds aren’t just zombies like the name implies; they are genetic experiments gone wrong (of course) and take all sorts of shapes, such as the insectoid Crawlers or the hulking Fleshpound. In the video, Creative Director William Munk talks with Jackamo Harvey, The Man with the Coolest Job, about which creature was the most interesting to represent and which was the most difficult to embody. Jackamo’s a charming dude and makes me want to go apply to my nearest Motion Capture facility. Anyway, onto the sleuthing:

Munk says that there are twelve varieties of Zeds, so let’s look at that for a second. We know about the Clot, Cyst, Slasher, Gorefast, Bloat, Crawler, Husk, Siren, Stalker, and Fleshpound. We know the Scrake was teased in the second Meet the Zeds video, so he’ll definitely be in KF2. I think it’s fair to assume that the Patriarch will return and probably get his own video. This all comes together to mean that the only new specimens will be the Cyst and the Slasher. Many fans have been thinking that there would be more specimens to be announced, so this puts an end to that. However, in my hands-off preview of the game, Munk talked about how easy it is for modders to create their own creatures and animations, so I’m excited to see what you crazy people will come up with.

Perhaps the most heart-wrenching news here is that the game has slipped from the nebulous end-of-2014 release to a similarly-nebulous 2015 release. I’m still hoping that Early Access will arrive sometime in the next couple months so we can get our hands on the game, but there’s no developments on that front. You’ll know about it when we do! ‘Til then, enjoy the video and stick around until the end for some hilarity.
