Killer is Dead continues to charm and confuse

Sadly, I have never played Killer 7, but if it’s anything like Killer is Dead narratively and visually (as people have compared it) then I’m terribly missing out. With each and every release of a new Killer is Dead trailer, I’m enamored by the the visuals and confused by what’s actually happening within the context of story. The last trailer that was released focused on the bosses of the game; the latest seems toalso serve as the introduction of the flamboyant David: a self indulgent but reserved bad-guy-possibly-a-demon-thing.

Mondo and David break the 4th wall in their exchange, explaining that if David were to take over the world, gamers would be upset because Killer is Dead is an action game. Fast forward and Mondo is fighting a giant tofu-looking monster. Alrighty.

These trailers lack a lot of context, dropping us amidst a scene where we’re not entirely sure who Mondo is talking to or why he or she is a problem to his mission. Mondo’s motives are hidden as well, probably to only be understood once we properly play the game from the start. I have no problem with this, because it suggests that Killer is Dead is going to have an esoteric narrative–which is to be expected from director Suda 51, and will be interesting because of it.

Killer is Dead releases in August on Xbox 360 and PS3.
