Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw rose to fame via his series of online video reviews “Zero Punctuation,” but the man has more than a few other talents. He is also a published writer, columnist for The Escapist, and a video game designer. His latest work? A lovecraftian roguelike game.
The world is being invaded by an evil God and the player has to find clues in order to prepare a banishing ritual that can prevent it. Players travel around the world, explore various locales, find solutions to random events, and fight a variety of different monsters. The combat engine apparently mixes direct attacks (kicking, guns, etc.) with a puzzle element that ties in with the banishing ritual the player assembles. I also noticed in the video below that a sanity mechanic will be present, which is admittedly pretty standard for games with a Lovecraftian element to them, but I am hopeful it will serve a more interesting use here than in most titles.
The Consuming Shadow will release soon, though Mr. Yahtzee has not provided an exact date.
