Monstrum, the highly successful procedurally generated survival horror game, will soon be making its way to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in both digital and physical versions. Developed by Team Junkfish and Published by SOEDESCO, Monstrum tasks you with trying to escape from an abandoned cargo ship, where vicious monsters could be lurking around every corner. Each playthrough is different, and players must devise new strategies to survive the various monsters that roam the ship.
Initially released on Steam in 2015, Monstrum went on to sell over 100,000 copies and garner mostly positive reviews. Along with compelling visuals, the game also boasts some unique features. Each deadly monster has its own distinctive behaviors, which require different strategies to survive, including hiding from them in lockers or under furniture, distracting them or flat-out running away. Powered by an adaptive AI, the same method to evade your enemies in one playthrough, may not work the next time around. You’ll also have to avoid numerous traps littered about the ship. To aid you in your flight, you will be able to utilize different escape routes along the way, provided you have the right items required to repair them. In addition to randomized monster encounters, players will also be greeted with different environments in each playthrough. The interior of the cargo ship will rearrange itself with every run, changing the placement of items and resources.
If you enjoy permadeath and claustrophobic environments, Monstrum is the game for you. I’m always happy to see a modern horror game get a physical release, so it’ll be cool when gamers can get their hands on a copy. As of right now, there’s no hard release date. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long to enjoy this on consoles.
