How Killer Freaks turned into ZombiU

Quite possibly the coolest thing to come out of Nintendo’s new console at E3 this year was ZombiU.  At least for survival horror fans nonplussed by all of the other things coming out of the Wii U.  However, ZombiU wasn’t always ZombiU.  In fact, last year, it was Killer Freaks from Outer Space, an original IP designed to capitalize on the unique capabilities of the Wii U.  The game looked interesting enough, but aliens just can’t compete with zombies.

This year, Ubisoft stated that Killer Freaks was no more – that it had been transformed into a zombie survival horror game.

IGN spoke with Ubisoft VP of Sales and Marketing Tony Key about how aliens turned to zombies.

We look at Killer Freaks as more of a tech demo.  They came up with this idea.  It was an easy execution for them to use the Rabbids technology that they had built to create the Rabbids, the wire frames, to create these very quickly, these goofy creatures.  And they brought it to us as a tech demo for the Wii U saying ‘this is what we can do with the game,’ and we thought ‘wow, that’s really cool, we should show that to Nintendo.’

This is what the aliens would have looked like

Think about that for a moment.  The team working on Killer Freaks was the same team that made Rabbids.  So the same team behind ZombiU also developed Rabbids.  It’s amazing what the inclusion of zombies can do to a game.

Zombies are serious business, people!

No, that’s not what I–nevermind.

Key noted that the shift from aliens to zombies coincided with a tonal shift as well.  The team wanted to make a more serious game.  He stated that replacing the enemies with zombies helped result in a much darker atmosphere and the game gradually became more compelling and serious.

Incidentally, ZombiU is a Wii U exclusive for now, but Ubisoft told IGN that it could eventually go multiplatform.  Yes, ZombiU could be coming to the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.

How would that work?  And what would it be called?
