Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number includes fleshed out characters and unlockable hard mode

Hotline Miami is one of my favorite games from this generation. I finally got to play it when it was released on the PlayStation Store not that long ago. Since then, I’ve been frequently revisiting it, trying to get better scores in each level. I’ll probably be doing that until its sequel (and series finale), Wrong Number, hits next year. Yes, I’m perfectly sane.

Hotline Miami 2 will focus on more than one character, shifting its gore-filled tale between the director and his crew, the fans, and whatever other faction gets announced next. The director is making a slasher film based on the events of the first game. The fans are donning animal masks and running around beating up thugs. Yes, things are going to get bloody!

The game’s creator, Dennis Wedin, spoke with Polygon about how they’ll be fleshing out the sequel’s characters, assuring fans that they will be “less blank.”  He states:

“We’re trying to give them more personality so players can get to know them a bit more. In the first game you only had Jacket, and we made him pretty blank. But for this game, if we made all the characters just blank, the player would feel the same way about all of them. We want them to be different — some you will agree more with, or won’t agree with, or maybe won’t understand their motivations or agenda.

We’re trying to make the world richer. We came up with all these characters when we worked on the first game, so this time around we’re telling the full story of Hotline Miami. That’s why it’s the last one.”

I really love how Dennaton Games is focusing a lot on the story for the sequel. The first game’s events truly leaves you thinking about everything that transpired once it’s all said and done, having players question the main character’s actions and ultimately, his sanity. Another thing I love is the other announcement from the team: an unlockable hard mode.

If players score a C+ or high in a level, they will then unlock the harder version of it. This strips players of some abilities, like lock-on, and boosts the difficulty of the enemies.

The first game had a perfect balance in difficulty, it wasn’t that brutal, but it was hard at parts, especially when you’re trying to get higher scores and maintain a good combo. I can’t wait to rage at the sequel’s hard mode!
