After initially announcing that Agony would have to be censored but that an unrated patch would be available, only to later have to backtrack due to legal consequences, Agony developer Madmind Studio today has some news. The developer has announced Agony Unrated, a self-published edition of the game with the cut content restored and more based on fan feedback.
Madmind Studio is looking for the best way to release Agony Unrated — they’ll either sell it at a 99% off discount to existing owners or as free DLC for the base game. They’re presently in talks with Valve about what’s feasible. In about three months, Agony Unrated will release on Steam with all of the updates that have been made to the standard version, in addition to the following changes:
- Additional sounds in the game and the cutscenes.
- Additional erotic animations for characters in the backgrounds.
- High resolution textures and models – without any censorship.
- All the scenes that have been removed from the standard version of Agony.
- Agony Mode unlocked from the beginning.
- Additional content for Agony Mode (Setting – The Forest, Boss Fight – Baphomet).
- Succubus Mode unlocked from the beginning.
- Additional animations for Succubus Mode.
This announcement arrives on the same day that Steam has announced that they’ll sell anything on the store now, as long as it’s not illegal or from a “troll” developer.
Pre-launch, Madmind took a lot of criticism for the cut content, which they themselves revealed to include scenes of demon sex, violent rape, baby killing, and butt physics. At launch, the conversation changed somewhat to focus on Agony‘s extremely frustrating gameplay, something the developer has attempted to fix with two patches so far. By the looks of it, this edition might also feature better visuals, which some suspect were dialed back to keep graphical parity with the console version.
It’s commendable that Madmind is looking to appease fans, and I’m hoping the game does indeed improve, but I’m wondering how far they’re going to push Agony Unrated now that they’re self publishing it and Steam has backed away from content restrictions. At best, we’ll see some more dicks and equal objectification of man-demons, at worst, more Red Goddess smut. Let’s see.
