Ever since Manga Gamer announced their re-release of 07th Expansion’s Higurashi: When They Cry visual novel series, fans were left wondering whether or not its spiritual sequel, Umineko: When They Cry, would be announced as well. These people can now rejoice, since at Anime Expo 2015 it was confirmed the game would come to Steam and receive the same beauty treatment as its predecessor.
Umineko is different in terms of setting but still shares many similarities with Higurashi. Instead of a creepy village, the story takes place in a gigantic mansion belonging to the wealthy Ushiromiya family, who are in a meeting to discuss the future of their financial assets when a witch, known as “Beatrice the Golden,” begins slaughtering them mercilessly. The final survivor, Battler Ushiromiya, is then presented a challenge to relive the day of the massacre over and over again until he can find a rational explanation for the events and prove magic doesn’t exist.
Manga Gamer will provide new art for the game, which may be controversial to those that considered their art-style too sexual compared to the classic version, as well as a redone translation.
