Higurashi will receive new character art after all

Higurashi

I like to occasionally make sure that games we reported on are still in development whenever we don’t hear anything about them for a while. One game that has been particularly silent is Manga Gamer’s re-release of Higurashi: When They Cry, the visual novel that inspired the cult-classic anime adaption of the same name. Turns out it’s doing quite well and will even receive a much-requested change.

Back in November of last year I reached out to Manga Gamer to ask if they had plans to include new character art when the game releases, which I was interested in because the original designs always looked a bit silly to me. Back then they denied that there were any plans, but at Anime Expo 2014 earlier this month they announced the new designs anyway. For those who prefer the original style, the version using these will still be sold on the company’s website.

I did some more digging and also found out that Higurashi will be moved from the company’s own engine to a unity-based one that runs better and allows the game to be ported to other platforms, so that’s some neat news as well. Expect the first chapter to release at the end of the year.
