There are few figures in gaming with a dedicated fanbase all their own, but Hideki Kamiya is one of the few. Being the director behind hits like Okami, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and of course Resident Evil 2, you can see why people love him. What you may not have known is Kamiya apparently had a really tough time developing Resident Evil 2, in fact the project was in dire straights for a time:
“I messed up in a big way, As a result of saying okay to everything that came up, it turned out horrible. We had to scrap what we had spent a year and a half making.”
When went on to mention his responsibility of being director, and the baggage that came with the project restarting:
“So everything that didn’t work out was my fault as director. Resident Evil 2 was receiving attention as one of Capcom’s new big titles, so the news quickly spread throughout the company. I felt like people were staring at me in the company cafeteria and saying, “That’s him! That’s the guy who ruined Resident Evil 2!” It was a shock, and very hard.”
Obviously we all know of the fate of Resident Evil 1.5 and what eventually became Resident Evil 2, but it certainly wasn’t public knowledge that Kamiya took the project restart so personally. All part of the passion of being a game designer I suppose.
