HG Legacy is a new studio, but they don’t intend to start with Iphone games or a small indie title, they want to set up a big game with big aspirations. We at Rely on Horror received an email early this morning asking us to reveal their first title: Dread Crown.
Dread Crown is a horror game that aims to do things differently than we have come to expect from indie games that tackle the genre. Players take on the role of a beginning police officer by the name of Allie Mitchel during an invasion of “Inhumanoids”, a predatory species of monsters that have polymorphic abilities. The monsters massacred the population and now the player is tasked with guiding Allie and her sister to safety.
The game has a healthy fascination with exploration, allowing players to explore the entirety of the city right from the start. Specific locations have to be reached in order to proceed the story, but going out of your way to look further will potentially reward the player with helpful items and lore. The latter is quite important, as HG Legacy wants to create a branching story where the decisions of the person controlling Allie will change the course of the plot. Of course, there is also the matter of the Inhumanoids themselves and where they came from, which will probably be a central question throughout the game.
While HG Legacy informed me that there will be fights against these creatures, it wasn’t disclosed how these battles would play out, besides the fact that the game plays in third person. Considering the enemies supposedly wiped out most of the city, I doubt the odds will be in our favor.
All in all it sounds like a promising project and I hope the studio can live up to the potential. Sadly, no release date or milestones were revealed to me, so there’s no telling when we will be able to try Dread Crown for ourselves.
