Oh dear, things don’t seem to turn out too well for the Family Man.
One of the main things that people have been anxious to see from Resident Evil VII: Biohazard is it’s combat, and here we finally get a first look at what it looks like at least. Running on what appears to be a demo set up for the PlayStation 4 Pro (presumably set up on the show floor of TGS), we get our first, clear (well, clear-er) looks at at least two weapons from the game.
The first image showcases a combat knife (which would seemingly lay to rest the rumors that we’ll be using a swiss-army knife). We’re in a location that should be familiar to anyone following RE7 as closely as I have – it’s the garage that was previously seen in both the E3 presentation, and as a screenshot on RE7‘s official website. We can also see the white muscle car, meeting it’s terrible fate.
The second image gives us a new look at the Glock pistol that was previously seen very briefly in the RE7 E3 reveal. The player isn’t aiming it, so it’s hard to tell if we’re dealing with a targeting crosshair (ala RE6), or laser sights (like RE4 and 5). It’s worth noting that there doesn’t seem to be a laser attachment on the gun, so that’s probably a no-go. As long as I’m speculating and observing, there’s also every chance that this game has no targeting retacle at all, especially considering these images also lack a heads-up-display of any kind. This has been done before, to great effect, in Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Game, which had no HUD at all, and you simply had to try and line-up the center of the screen with your target. It was great and immersive, and one of many elements that made me love that game all those years ago (in fact, at the time, Electronic Gaming Monthly even called it “Resident Evil in first person”). Considering how hard-core Capcom seems to be going with immersion and horror, I wouldn’t at all be surprised to learnt that this was the direction they were going in.
Oh yeah, and Jack Baker, aka The Family Man, (who tormented us in the Beginning Hour demo) appears to be burning alive. The effect is actually a little horrifying, seeing his skin and clothes blacken reminds me a little too much of things like The Terminator or West World (the film, not the new mini-series). RE has had the ability to set fire to enemies before, but this somehow feels a little more graphic and personal. So, awesome!
The third screen is visiting another previously seen location, the large Spencer-mansion-esque study that was featured in the Desolation trailer, although this time sans creepy person in a wheel chair. There isn’t much to say at this point, since we really can’t get a closer look at anything. It does definitly invoke the architecture of all three Spencer mansions (The original, Arklay facility from Resident Evil, the in-doors, partial recreation in Antarctica from Code: Veronica, and the European version from Lost in Nightmares). We do know that Umbrella is somehow involved in all of this, thanks to that photo we find in the demo, so the idea of this place having previously been another one of Spencer’s hideaways isn’t out of the question.
The final screen isn’t much to write home about, simply another look at one of the exterior daytime segments, although it does seem to be the same location we saw previously during Capcom’s Photogrametry presentation.
So there you have it, at least a first taste of RE7‘s combat. Not a whole heck of a lot, but it’s cool to see at least. It remains to be seen if this is from the final game, or another demo, or even an update to Beginning Hour. Fingers crossed we’re getting some more gameplay at the very least. There’s for sure more to come from TGS this week on RE7, so we’ll be waiting with bated breath.
