Gamescom 2020: DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Gets Brand New Trailer

Ancient Gods

As the previous teaser suggested, Gamescom’s Opening Night Livestream delivered the first official trailer for DOOM Eternal‘s upcoming DLC entitled, The Ancient Gods, Part One. Thanks to the new gameplay, fans now have a better idea of what to expect this October.

The trailer shows a few gameplay additions, including two new enemies. One is a demon with the ability to possess other enemies (presumably empowering them in the process) and looks like a something you’ll want to kill as soon as possible. The other enemy looks to be a new variety of Mayker (a new alien species introduced in DOOM Eternal) with an attack set reminiscent of Khan Mayker boss fight.

The Ancient Gods is also expanding the mobility of the player even further. DOOM Eternal added a grappling hook attachment for the Super Shotgun, enabling the player to hone-in on enemies while maintaining the speed and intensity of combat. Now, the grappling hook has the added functionality of horizontally swinging around the targets, a feature that is bound to have heavy implications on the platforming sections as well as the new combat arenas.

As the name would suggest, the story of The Ancient Gods will be told across two expansions. According to PCGamesN’s interview with id developers, the team’s ambition is to create an experience comparable in scale and grandeur to the original release. The developers also noted that The Ancient Gods, Part One will amp up the difficulty as indicated by the two Marauders present at the end of the trailer.

The Ancient Gods, Part One will launch on October 20th, 2020, and can be played without owning DOOM Eternal. Additionally, console owners that already own it can receive a free upgrade for next-gen consoles.
