Game For Windows Live isn’t getting shut down anytime soon

It’s been rumored since summer of 2013 that Microsoft’s PC gaming service GFWL was going to be shut down on July 1st of this year. However it now looks as though that the service will stay up for the foreseeable future. Game Informer recently asked Microsoft about the status of the service and received the following reply:

We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service. As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.

Well on the one hand games like Resident Evil 5 and Dark Souls will still be playable with their online components intact, but on the other hand GFWL will endure. Chances are companies will continue to drop the service as time goes on. I mean even Microsoft’s own Twisted Pixel removed GFWL from their game Ms. Splosion Man in favor of Steam.
