An all-star cast has come together to bring Vampyr to television in the (hopefully near) future. McG, of Charlie’s Angels and Terminator: Salvation, is teaming up with Wonderland Sound & Vision, of Supernatural fame. On hand to keep things true to the game is dj2 Entertainment, a transmedia company that handles adapting games into television and movies. The title will belong to Fox 21, so there are certainly deep enough pockets to do the dismal, vampire-laden streets of London justice.
Vampyr is a recently-released action RPG following the story of Doctor Jonathan Reid as he wakes from having been unceremoniously turned into a vampire. He’s on his own in the docks around London, trying to escape guerrilla brigades of vampire hunters and track down the person responsible for his recent transition. Along the way, he makes powerful friends and enemies and uncovers a bustling underworld roaming the streets of London after dark. Moral choices abound, each changing Jonathan’s fate as their effects ripple out into the world.
The visuals and sound in Vampyr are stunningly beautiful, with haunting music breathing life into damp, decaying alleys and buildings. Vampires take on many different forms, showcasing a multitude of bodies, from the beautiful to the grotesquely deformed. At the center of everything, a busy hospital tends to victims of both war and the Spanish Influenza, its halls brightly lit and littered with suffering patients who outnumber the rooms. Everything here is a perfect backdrop for period drama, and the story has already been written. Fox 21 was smart to snap it up, and we can only hope they’re ready to put as much effort into the show as DONTNOD put into the game. Looking at the list of names attached to the project already, I think we can assume it’s in good hands.
