Originally detailed as a free-to-play mod of Half Life 2, Faceless is now going to be a commercial game sold for $9.99 instead. Normally this would upset many of its supporters, so what are the developers doing to justify this? The games creative director, Adam Sklar, has a few things to say.
“We will be shipping out a free version of Faceless with the Hyde Street Station and Forest map, alongside the prologue as a single-player standalone build. These are the maps Faceless would have had, if it were to remain free, with the prologue as a bonus addition. We will be selling the full multiplayer and single-player experience of Faceless complete with all the maps and gamemodes, prologue and epilogue, the entire package on Steam for $9.99.”
Sklar also stated that the success of other indie games is what inspired the change from a free-to-play title into a commercial one. He plans on using the incoming revenue to improve the title even further. Another reason the game has gone commercial is to keep the development team together; many members were volunteering in their own time and the team has changed considerably from the beginning of the project.
“Going commercial is the best possible way to ensure we make this game the best it can possibly be, and continue to update it after its release to ensure a massive replayability value and new content. Faceless is no longer a mod, we will not be using any assets from Valve and will be total-conversion.”
I haven’t been following the progress on Faceless, so I’m not sure what to make of all this. Are any of you excited for the game’s release? How do you feel about the change in price for a better game?
