First of all, The Last of Us 2 has been rumored to have had several release dates, with the last time we reported on it being an October release for this year. However, signs seem to point to that being pushed back, probably to make room for PS4’s Death Stranding release in November. First of all, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier (who’s usually in the know on this stuff) commented on this first, a little bit before Death Stranding’s release date was officially announced:
Looks like Death Stranding is about to get announced for a November release. The Last of Us 2 was also planned for fall 2019 but I actually just heard it got bumped to early 2020, possibly February? Either way, wild final year for PS4 https://t.co/wh6kimA73b

So that’s one down, but who else? Games analyst Daniel Ahmad chimed in on ResetEra to back up a statement about the game releasing in February as well, “It’s the current internal date, yes”. Okay, so that’s two. The third might be the most damning, or perhaps it means nothing at all considering there really isn’t anything there. Ellie’s voice actress, Ashley Johnson, was asked during an interview if she knew when The Last of Us 2 was being released and gets out a fehhhh before the interviewer cuts it off. Something about the timing feels weird — like planned kinda weird, but I’ve also been listening to spooky conspiracy theories for the last few days so I might just be paranoid. There’s also every chance we’re reading too much into it. Lord knows I love my words that begin with fehhhh.
I’d say this all sounds pretty sound. Especially when considering previous comments from Naughty Dog regarding the game is in the “closing out” process, and the previously reported October release combined with the idea that The Last of Us 2 was pushed back in order to accommodate Death Stranding sounds about right. It’ll be interesting to see what title garners more attention/praise/sales, considering they both come from insanely high pedigrees, especially as this console generation seems to be closing on both of them. I imagine it won’t be too much longer before we hear the release date for real, and those Sony State of Play things seem to drop at random. I love the original Last of Us and have pretty high hopes for the sequel (although I’m not 100% sure I’m up that level of emotional stress again).
