My favorite thing about E3 is always the announcement of a game that is releasing well before anyone had reason to expect it. The pure antithesis of chucking out a trailer before the ink has even dried on a game’s concept art, press-ready games are what keep E3 from devolving into a five-year roadmap for the publishers present at the conferences. Remnant: From the Ashes is one such game, releasing a world of ghastly pain onto the world this August, a mere year after its announcement.
Remnant: From the Ashes is a third-person survival action shooter set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monstrous creatures. As one of the last remnants of humanity, you’ll set out alone or alongside up to two other players to face down hordes of deadly enemies and epic bosses, and try to carve a foothold, rebuild, and then retake what was lost.
The Remnant: From the Ashes website gives this brief summary, alongside a short background of the threat facing humanity. Humans have the technology to open portals to other worlds, which they must use to chase down the ancient evil that has wrecked their home. One must wonder whether these portals are the very door this evil used to sneak onto Earth in the first place.
While the website’s summary is interesting enough, Perfect World and Gunfire Games have plenty more to say about it. While the game is not exclusively multiplayer, the hardest challenges and best rewards will require teaming up with other players. Each player can specialize their character, skills, and weapons to fit their playstyle perfectly, giving them the best chance against the darkness. Upgrades and modifications to weapons are gained in battle, with enemies dropping the necessary loot to prepare your weapons for the next fight.
There are four unique worlds in Remnant: From the Ashes; Earth, Yeasha, Swamp and Wasteland are dynamically generated each time you play through. New quests, maps, enemy encounters, and world events greet players upon their return, keeping the game fresh for hours to come. On stage, the announcers made a quick comparison to Dark Souls, so players of that series may find they have a new title to enjoy when Remnant comes out.
Remnant: From the Ashes will release on August 20, 2019 on PC, PS4, and XBox One. Preorders are open now and will allow players to jump in as early as August 16th.
