After years of waiting, fans of Dying Light can gear up for a new game. Dying Light 2 was officially announced during the XBox keynote at E3 2018, showcasing a choice-based system, fluid parkour movement and combat, and enough undead to put Romero to shame. The announcement trailer showcases a world devoid of hope, though each area shown in the trailer flashes several times with minor changes. That turns out to be a hint at the choice-based system governing Dying Light 2, a move that adds replay value and makes every player experience a little different.
According to narrative designer Chris Avellone, “Dying Light 2 will be the first in the genre where your choices have consequences in the world itself.” In the showcased gameplay demo, players see two outcomes from a single mission. In one, the Peacekeepers are allowed to come in and create a lawful community where resources are shared, but dissent is deadly. In the other, a player-run black market controls water, granting access to new merchants and deals, but attracting roving bands of mercenaries who want control. Avellone continues, “Dying Light 2 features a functioning ecosystem that reacts on multiple levels to the things you do and the choices you make.”
Under this system, each player creates their own world with each decision they encounter in the game. This changes the power balance between different factions, allowing communities to flourish or killing them off. From trade opportunities to ease of travel throughout the city, nothing is untouched by the choices players make. Accepting and completing quests creates a unique world, though no amount of good in the day will save players once the sun is down. In the dark, the undead come unbidden and in full force. Prepare during the day, for there is danger in Dying Light.
