Although I expected to see Dead Rising 3 in some capacity at E3, I was not prepared for how excited I would get when I saw it. I admit, the Xbox One exclusivity certainly soured the reveal, as I’m struggling to understand Microsoft decision to implement such restrictive DRM and ownership policies that they alone share in the console market, but the footage that was shown was truly interesting. Since the reveal, a bunch of information has been released on latest entry in the Dead Rising series.
For starters, the game will be developed by Capcom Vancouver, the developer of the last two Dead Rising titles. The game will take place 10 years after the events of Dead Rising 2 (I’ll presume the original and not Off The Record, arguably the better of the two versions of Dead Rising 2). Nick Ramos will be the protagonist of this title, which is being described as “darker” and “cinematic.” Information given suggests that the game will still have humor, albeit of the “dark” variety. Perhaps this means we’ll see less goofiness and more “haha, that guy’s wife and kids just died in a funny way” type humor. This might also mean that Capcom is aiming to have Dead Rising be the survival horror game that many Resident Evil fans and critics didn’t feel like they got with the release of Resident Evil 6. I don’t mind more survival elements, but I sure will miss the colors and vibrancy that Off The Record had.
Instead of taking place in a mall or casino resort, Dead Rising 3 will take place in Los Perdidos, a city that’s bigger than the first two game’s maps combined. Because of the new, vast map, Dead Rising 3 is said to increase the role of vehicles. Based on the trailer and the information provided, vehicles will not offer perfect protection; zombies will grab on, affecting steering quality.
Provided information states that Dead Rising 3 is “easy to play, hard to master”. Despite the story still centering around an event that will signal the end of the story/investigation, Dead Rising 3 will see the removal of timed missions and a countdown clock. There will also be an autosave system, but don’t freak out just yet; the game will feature a “Nightmare Mode”, which keeps the countdown, timed missions, and manual saves with”classic Dead Rising rules.”
Weapon creation, as seen in the reveal, can be done at any moment. Hundreds of potential weapon combos are suggested in the info release from E3. The ability to create at any time is nice, because you don’t need a special room for using some duct tape, do you? Well, not unless you’re a serial killer.
Cooperative play has been confirmed for Dead Rising 3, as well as Xbox Smartglass and Kinect integration. The reveal trailer showcased what SmartGlass would contribute to the game, which was a second screen that acted as Nick’s PDA. Stats and progress, and real-time updates (presumably missions, survivors, or new areas of interest) will also be assigned to SmartGlass when used. Lastly, Kinect’s integration comes in the form of zombies hearing noises in your room, using voice commands to steer survivors, and… motion controls to escape the grasp of zombies. That last one is something I need to see. Oh, boy.
I know the Xbox One isn’t doing so well in the public eye right now, but man, it sure has at least one game that I want.
