Doom 4 being remade from the ground up, Rage 2 ditched

Doom 4

Bethesda have confirmed today that a new version of Doom 4 has started development, and that they have ditched plans to make a Rage 2.

Doom 4 was planned to release fairly closely to that of new consoles; starting development back in 2011, but now it seems a lot farther off. The game they were making was not meeting their quality or ‘excitement level’ expectations, and so they made the call recently to reboot it and start with a new version of the game.

“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect. As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know,” Pete Hines, the marketing boss of Bethesda, stated.

As a result of this, and the lower-than-expected sales of Rage, ZeniMax, the parent company to both Bethesda and id Software, cancelled Rage 2 and put the staff at work instead on Doom 4. Games being delayed for so long often can negatively impact a product, but it is also true that remaking a game to make it the best game it can be can often end up creating wonderful products out to the market. It’ll be interesting to see how Doom 4 comes along in the likely years to come.
