Team Salvato’s F2P visual novel Doki Doki Literature Club, a game that is far more disturbing than it seems, has been downloaded over 2 million times. The developer announced that the game reached 2 million only a month after it hit a 1 million download milestone.
Doki Doki Literature Club has seen viral success due to its horror elements, which break the fourth wall and instill some solid psychological scares. The game features a simple premise at first, not much unlike moe visual novels, in which a boy joins his school’s literature club to spend some time with its female members. The quest for the ultimate waifu turns into a nightmare that I won’t spoil for you. You’ll just have to play it for yourself.
I look forward to more subversive horror from Team Salvato. Perhaps we’ll see a premium priced sequel in due time. For those who already played through for themselves or prefer let’s plays, you can catch my complete roleplay playthrough below (it was a boring Sunday and I got invested in it, OK?).
