Desperate For Third Person Resident Evil 7 Still? Modders Got Your Back.

Told ya.

As Resident Evil VII: Biohazard draws closer and closer (only two more weeks!), fan worries about the shift in direction seem to finally be settling down (as combat, puzzles, monsters and more have finally been shown off after months of waiting), there still seems to be some concern over the shift in perspective. While I’ve always been firmly in the boat of “Resident Evil is more than a camera perspective, and it’s pretty sad if that’s enough to make you boycott what looks to be the best numbered entry the series has had in over ten years”, there’s still some outcry for the game to at the very least have the option. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if there was one unlockable in the final game, but in the meantime, modders are working on just such a thing with the Beginning Hour Demo on PC.

YouTuber Tom Humble showcases what the game would look like from a couple of different third-person angles, and if anything I find it somewhat surprising just how detailed the animation on the playable character is. While he lacks a head (no reason to put something that is supposed to never be visible there), the body appears to be fully animated and detailed, presumably since we can look down and actually see our body during gameplay. But it makes for some interesting third person action. The video is short, and simple, and Humble has clearly not gone and tried to make an actual working third person perspective, rather just set the camera in various places around the model (and a lot of the tension and immersion are clearly just out the window) but I’m sure this looks very promising to fans holding out on being able to play RE7 from a more traditional POV. I have no doubt in my mind that a better working version will become available days after RE7 is released.

If you’re interested, someone with a similar mindset did basically the exact opposite a little while back, ripping REmake‘s character animation and recreating that game’s opening moments in first person, using RE5‘s character models for Wesker and Barry, and a fan-made model of the Spencer Mansion’s main hall and dining room. It’s actually pretty damn cool, if a little janky.
