Death In Candlewood Comes to Kickstarter

Death In Candlewood has come to Kickstarter. Developed by Rosebud Games, with talent from such titles as Silent Hill: Origins, F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, The Witcher, and Bioshock, the Spanish studio hopes to fund their gothic open-world FPS horror game that looks rather promising (albeit presented in an awkward Kickstarter video).

Said to be inspired by classic horror films and the literature of Poe, Death In Candlewood aims to take us to the 1940s and into the role of a doctor named Ray Dune. Ray’s mentor Lester Caravan was driven to research reanimation after his wife died, and in the process created something horrible. The game will take place over the course of one night as Ray explores both a city and a mountainous region for a way to stop Caravan’s inhuman creations and rescue his adopted son Rizzo – Rizzo potentially being modeled after Pepper in American Horror Story Asylum.

Death In Candlewood is asking for $60,000 so that it can release in spring 2015. The game will feature over 20 weapons both melee and ranged, driveable vehicles, over 1000 buildings, and a 6km² environment to explore and interact with NPCs. Stretchgoals will allow for Rosebud to add Oculus Rift support, more language options, and Mac & Linux versions.

Overall, Death in Candlewood looks pretty interesting and ambitious. Visually, the game looks fairly good and its story sounds incredibly weird, but in a good way. I can’t say that I’m not conflicted by Rizzo’s inspired appearance, but that’s no biggie; Pepper was a likeable character in Asylum, anyway.
