After several months of silence, the team behind the new Dead Space remake is finally ready to shed some more light on Isaac’s return! Unlike the last developer live stream, this one focused (more or less) entirely on audio design, which is one of the most essential core components of the series as a whole. The stream is fascinating, showing off not just the new audio mixing and recordings, but also how they’re being implemented into the world with new and more advanced occlusion systems than were possible in the original 2008 Dead Space (or its sequels, for that matter). Check it out:
One of my favorite highlights here is the implementation of Spider-Man PS4 style reactionary dialogue, which changes depending on Isaac’s condition. Walking, running, and on low health will result in different variations of Isaac’s dialogue being played, creating a more dynamic and real feeling experience. I was also a huge fan of the sound design around the water dripping effects, as individual drops smacked against the walkway during the final gameplay presentation, and then changed to a softer metallic ting as they drizzled across Isaac’s suit. It brings the world of Dead Space to life in a way that I cannot wait to hear in clear audio once playing the game itself.
While this presentation was a little light on true gameplay (everything that was shown was rough, pre-alpha tester footage complete with wireframes), the devs have promised another live stream coming this May! Along with this, they’ve also set a targeted release date of early 2023, which is much sooner than I was expecting. We simply cannot wait to get our hands on Dead Space remake, everything from the sound to the visuals to the new combat mechanics (shown in the last stream) has been so exciting. We’ll keep you updated as more information comes to light!
