Back in 2009 we received the revelation that D.J. Caruso, whose most recent film is I Am Number Four, will be warming the director’s chair for the Dead Space film adaptation. Since that time, though, it’s been as quiet as the Ishimura. Now we have something new to go by. It seems like the Dead Space film is still very much alive.
Still in the early production phases for the film, D.J. Caruso has even played around with the idea of making a prequel film to the franchise. As any fan of the series would know, we’ve already (technically) received a prequel film with the release of Dead Space: Downfall. And the once Wii-exclusive, now Playstation Move friendly Dead Space: Extraction also served to set the stage for the events in the original Dead Space. So do we need yet another prequel? Fear not, as the following quote by Caruso himself suggests that this was just part of the pre-production stage:
“… the story didn’t quite work out as well as we wanted it to. But if we can capture how — I don’t want to say, I guess, how scary or horrifying it would be to play that game because it’s really, really fantastic. It’d be fun to make that into a movie.”
At least we know that the story is being given a lot of attention for this future film. It would be disappointing to hear that the producers are focusing on pure action and, let’s say it together: 3D for a film that is meant to represent one of the finest examples of modern survival-horror. It’s nice to see Caruso taking good consideration towards the plot of the film. You can check out the interview where these tidbits were extracted from in the video below, in which Caruso is promoting the German release of I Am Number Four. We’ll bring you more news as it surfaces.
