Dead Space Creator Glen Schofield Wants to Return to Series

Dead Space

With the successful release of the Dead Space remake, fans are left wondering if the beloved horror franchise could see a return. The remake of the original game delivered a polished and faithful recreation of the classic survival horror experience. However, many long-time fans are eager for something more – a fourth installment that would bring space engineer Isaac Clarke back into the terrifying world of Necromorphs.

Glen Schofield, the creator of Dead Space, has recently shared comments that have fueled speculation about the possibility of a new entry in the series. Schofield, who went on to create The Callisto Protocol and lead Striking Distance Studios, seems open to revisiting his iconic creation. When a fan replied to one of his posts urging him to return to the franchise, Schofield responded:

The Dead Space series has a storied legacy in the horror genre, with the first game setting the foundation for what would become one of the most iconic and terrifying settings in modern gaming.

Dead Space 2 is widely regarded as the high point of the series, celebrated for its innovative weapons, chilling set pieces, including the infamous nursery sequence, and a more nuanced depiction of the protagonist, Isaac Clarke.

However, the third entry in the series, Dead Space 3, received mixed reactions. While it maintained some of the signature horror elements, it leaned more into action-heavy gameplay and cooperative mechanics, which some fans felt diluted the horror atmosphere. Even Schofield, while not directly involved in the development of Dead Space 3, seems to acknowledge that the third installment may not have lived up to the expectations set by its predecessors.

Nearly two decades have passed since the original Dead Space, and the remake has only reignited the demand for a proper continuation of the story. Schofield himself seems optimistic about the idea.

While Schofield’s comments offer a glimmer of hope, several factors could influence the franchise’s future. EA Motive, the studio behind the Dead Space remake, is currently busy with other projects. This includes a collaboration with DICE on the next Battlefield game and developing a new Iron Man game for Marvel.

Meanwhile, Schofield’s own studio, Striking Distance, is shifting its focus to a new project, a roguelike shooter titled Redacted.

The gaming industry is no stranger to revivals, as seen with the recent resurgence of Silent Hill, which recently made a comeback after lying dormant for years. If Schofield and EA can align their schedules and resources, the possibility of Dead Space 4 doesn’t seem too far-fetched.
