Dead Space 3 makes swearing deadly

My parents thought me that yelling at a game won’t change anything, but now Dead Space 3 will finally prove them wrong. It was already known that the third installment in the popular franchise was going to support Kinect, but a recent interview with Executive Producer Steve Papoutsis has shed some light on the details.

“We actually have some commands that people will need to figure out,” said Steve. “But there are commands where you might be in a certain situation and you might yell a specific expletive and it might behave in a way that you want it to. Being able to do certain things without changing the grip on your controller is really advantageous. Add in co-op and now you can do things with simple voice commands like give your partner ammo or items – things that would normally take a couple of extra clicks on the sticks.” In other words: some standard functions will be replaced with vocal commands and there are likely going to be some special commands that players can use (sort of like a cheat-code, I presume).

This is all part of Dead Space‘s ongoing effort to take menus out of the experience and I must say that it sounds fairly useful. I can however see some trouble arising, since the Kinect is not particularly known for its quality (although most of that is related to the motion-controls). If this will also be used in co-op, then there is of course the possibility that commands from Player 1 are performed by the character of Player 2 and vice versa. Consider me cautiously optimistic for now.

At the moment it’s unknown whether or not vocal commands will work in competitive multiplayer, but if they do, then nobody in the game will ever need regular bullets again.
