Dead Space 3 dev blog explores the crazies

When I interviewed Dead Space 3 producer John Calhoun, he said “psychological horror is still present, but not to the degree that you saw Dead Space 2,”. This worried me as dementia was one of my favorite aspects of Dead Space 2. Playing as a hallucinating Isaac, on the edge of sanity gave the game a nice coat of psychological horror elements. Thankfully, it seems, that dementia will be returning, although in a new, shared way.

Senior production designer of Dead Space 3 has posted a developer blog entry about the new dementia elements in Dead Space 3‘s co-op mode. John Carver will be the main recipient of dementia courtesy of the latest Marker. During co-op, Carver will have access to certain areas that trigger hallucinations of his troubled past. This allows for co-op players to see different things when playing together. An interesting feature for co-op, indeed.

I have my reservations for a survival horror series going co-op but Dead Space 3 might be doing it right. I guess we’ll find out on February 5th (Feb. 8th for Europe).
