Dead Rising 4 pre-E3 build leaks, Redditor gives some new details

Once more, unto the breach. Or leak, in this case.

The pre-E3 build of Dead Rising 4 apparently leaked out onto the internet at some point, and a few gamers were able to get their hands on it before the link was taken down. The aptly named Redditor Dead_Rising_ shared their thoughts and a few details based on what they played, as well as some new images which I’ve interspersed throughout. It’s worth noting these details are from a very early version of the game, and many may be subject to change, the final game may even be unrecognizable from these impressions.

1. Inventory management is like Dead Rising 3, however upgraded a bit. There are three main categories of items, being Melee, Ranged, and Throwing. There is a fourth, for healing items, however, you can only hold 3 healing items from the start. (The green + symbols in the bottom left indicate how many health items you’re holding).

2. Combo weapons are back, and the first one you make is the spiked bat, but this time with a Bowie knife and baseball bat. Same style as Dead Rising 3, you can craft combo weapons anywhere.

3. Camera is fun, and has three modes. Regular, night vision, and spectrum. All 3 are used to search for clues during the story mission, and the clue finding is like hot and cold, where the chevrons on both sides of the camera view, and light up from bottom to top depending on how close you are.

4. Instead of health bars, you have health in the form of numbers. You start with 500 health.

5. New mechanic called scrap. You can occasionally find scrap in containers, dumpsters, drawers, etc, and it gives you a random amount of scrap (I’ve had as low as 5 but as high as 450, that number could be a lot higher since I only played for a few hours in the beginning areas) which, according to the hint/tips in the menu can be used to purchase other items from vendors (a la pawn shops from DR2 / DR2OTR, but better).

6. Never got to a restroom or other save point, but I’m going to assume that save points are the same as every other game. The build I was playing doesn’t support reviving, and I died about an hour in and never saved, so if I play again tonight I’ll get pictures of the map and hint / tips section as I go. I’ll continue to update this thread when I play again with any new information.

I’m excited to hear that my theory regarding the camera being used in an almost Arkham Style detective mode turned out to be on the right track. While the camera function of Dead Rising and Off The Record (and Case West, but we… we don’t talk about Case West) was a fun time-waster, it really didn’t involve itself with gameplay in any real way, aside from a few scripted moments where you’d essentially photograph a cutscene at the right time, and even then that was only about earning points. Everything else sounds more or less par for the course, I guess. Sounds like some inspiration has been drawn from other games, like the other Xbox exclusive game State of Decay, and the new health bar looks very reminiscent of Borderlands.

They also shared a few videos of their playtime, but I cannot embed the videos, sadly. Instead, I will link to them and describe them. Before you read on, however, note that while this build will probably differ in many ways, the cutscenes most likely won’t change much, and there’s gonna be some massive early spoilers here.

The first which is what appears to be the opening, showing Frank (who I guess is a college professor now?) and a young woman (who as far as I know has yet to be officially revealed, but the subtitles seem to name her Vicky) arguing about returning to Willamette. Frank is going full Ian Malcolm, with no force on heaven or earth making him re-enter the old homestead of the Dead Rising series. Well, until he abruptly changes his mind. Something that’s pretty clear right away is the tongue-in-cheek attitude of the previous games (which always walked a thin line between genuine horror and satirical humor) has completely shifted over to comedy, something I’m not wholly against as the cutscene does have a fun genuinely funny moments.

The second, shows a cutscene of a very diverse looking cast of characters discussing something that sounds like an attempt at a reversal of zombification (and it doesn’t seem to be going to well).

The third and final video shows Frank and Vicky finding one of the victims of said attempted experiments, and things go to shit pretty fast, with Vicky freaking out on Frank, and blowing their cover.

Overall, this has only increased my excitement for the final game (although it looks like TJ Rotolo is gone for good from this entry at least), and I can’t wait to get my hands on it (although at least we have the remastered versions of Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2, and Off The Record to stave us off when they release in September). Dead Rising 4 releases for Xbox One and PC December 6th.
