Remember that trailer for Dead Island? You know, the one that lead many eager people to believe that this zombie-filled first-person romp through a tropical island would be differentiated from other zombies titles in the market with an emotional, heartfelt tale of survival horror– ultimately resulting in what’s no less than a perfect example of marketing a game. Yeah, well, Lionsgate remembers it. They remember it real good.
The studio has just announced earlier this morning that they have gotten the rights to bring Deep Silver’s Dead Island to the silver screen. And guess what? It’s going to be based on that trailer everyone and their mothers went nuts about. But, how can one trailer be expanded into a full-length feature film? Well, I’m sure Lionsgate will find a way, with the studio claiming that the film will provide “an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”
No director or writer(s) has been set for the project yet, but Sean Daniel– who worked on The Mummy– will be serving as a producer. With that knowledge, an official release date is long ways off, with the film possibly being targeted for 2013 if all goes smoothly. And who knows, if this turns out being a smash-hit at the box office, Lionsgate could have a potential annual affair on their hands with Dead Island– to replace the concluded Saw series.
Oh, and I’m quite sure this will be one of those rare instances where a film adaptation turns out being better than the game it’s based on. Ouch!
Such a lovely family.
