One of finer things about gaming on a PC over a console is mods. They can add hours of extra play time to a game riddled with bugs, or upscale graphics to almost photo-realistic quality. For Techland, a mod for Dead Island has served as inspiration for an entirely new project.
A Dead Island coder created a mod that allowed players to freeze zombies in place before hacking them to pieces with a two-handed sword. The ability to freeze the action is pretty cool, and they saw that. From that came the idea that maybe their next venture should be in a fantasy-based setting.
From that, Project Hell was born.
You can tell by the title alone that this isn’t your average fantasy title, looking to take its cues from Quake and Diablo over unicorns and rainbows. The game is being billed as a first-person hack and slash title, which will take the fighting mechanics of Dead Island (hopefully tweaked a touch) and add in magic, creating a bit of a dark fantasy setting.
In a blog post over at Sharpen Your Axes, Kruq explains that the team “wanted to go back to when enemies were hideous and repulsive, fights were brutal and bloody and the gameplay was challenging and and rich with secrets waiting to be uncovered.”
While searching for inspiration, the team was referring rather constantly to early European medieval times, times where people were torn between Christianity and pagan beliefs. A time where, as Kruq puts it, “people attended masses, but kept casting curses, asking oracles for advice and while living in the fear of necromancy.”
Project Hell sounds like our kind of game.
There’s not much news available about Project Hell at the moment. You can head over to Sharpen Your Axes to read more about the title. When more news breaks on this new project, you can be sure we’ll be bringing it straight to you.
