We’d much rather wait for a finished game rather than a rushed, buggy game, right? Right? The standalone version of DayZ has still not seen an alpha release despite the standalone alpha appearing in the Steam Database.
Creator Dean Hall took to Reddit this morning to give gamers an update as to why the game’s alpha hasn’t been released yet. If you’re not interested in reading tech-speak, “we need performance” is the gist of it. The game simply isn’t ready enough, guys.
Our latest tests have all shown some runaway systems in the code we need to tidy up. The variable synchronization system that was developed for work with the network bubble is checking the variables very often. We’re optimizing this.
Hall also went on to state that several audio bugs are causing serious performance issues and that the team is reluctant to release the alpha with these issues present. Hall stressed that at the very minimum he believeves the game should run at 15 frames per second with 50 players in the sandbox, 2000 zombies and 25,000 loot items.
As of right now, there’s also no scheduled release date and they’re not telling people what the release date is either. It would seem like they don’t know, or maybe because they don’t want to fail to deliver at a certain point that they never had publicly committed to. Sounds fair.
If I start saying ‘Oh, it won’t be out then,’ people just start asking me about the day after, and the day after. So it encourages people to keep asking me when it is, and the ‘announced date’ would be when I go ‘Yeah, it could be out then.’
Things like creating your character, joining a server and steam integration have been finalized into the flow of the game and are working as they should. Basic functionality for 10-20 players with new zombies also works, but the inventory system is a bit of a mixed bag however.
Hall concludes that the team is actively working to fix these issues, but again, there’s no set release date, and don’t count on getting one until these issues are fixed.
