2K’s Darkness games were some of the most ambitious, memorable shooters of the Xbox 360/Playstation 3 generation. Originally developed by Starbreeze Studios with Digital Extremes making the second entry, they blurred the lines of role-playing and shooter design. Now you can try The Darkness II completely free, thanks to Humble.
For the uninitiated, The Darkness II follows mafioso crime lord Jackie Estacado. After a rival gang attacks his crew and nearly kills him, he is forced to release his inner demons to survive and take revenge. We’re talking about literal demons living inside him though. The titular Darkness is a demon bound to Jackie that gives him superhuman abilities, and as a player you can control it. Hack n’ slash enemies to bits, throw improvised items, or even grab stunned foes for horrifying executions that would make the Doomslayer blush. Oh, and the story is well written and interesting too.
While it’s regrettable that the original Darkness game isn’t available anywhere digitally, The Darkness 2 is a worthy successor and worth experiencing for any fans of last-gen horror shooters in the vein of F.E.A.R. and Condemned 2.
