In what sounds like a bizarre inspiration for a piece of hardware, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida revealed that the Souls series was a source of inspiration when creating the PlayStation 4. In the most recent episode of the Playstation Blogcast, Shuhei said the following:
“Lots of things these games, Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls – did, like leaving the message to other people asynchronously so you feel connected but not really connected at the same time, all of these things inspired us when we were designing the system features for PS4.”
“The sharing features, I enjoy so much watching people playing Dark Souls on YouTube. These games still have special place in my memory.”
That’s a very cool to see the works of a 3rd party software developer directly effecting the creation of the hardware for a next-gen console. I wonder how often console hardware manufacturers like Sony are influenced by games released on the previous generation consoles.
