It was a pre-E3 09’ reveal of a a first-person title that will provide something for those sadistic, blood-thirsty Wii owners who’ve had enough of the lack of mature titles on the system. It was a game with a heavy emphasis on 4-player cooperative-play where players can take on hordes of various monstrosities the likes of those seen in classic horror cinema. It was essentially Left 4 Dead on Nintendo’s platform and even developer High Voltage Software couldn’t deny that. That was then, and this is now. And things have changed, a lot.
When ‘The Grinder’ was first announced, it was a beacon of hope to Wii owners that have been yearning for such a title to grace their consoles. The game included werewolves, zombies, vampires, and other forms of monsters that have a good standing in the horror scene. The fact that it was also a Left 4 Dead styled game also provided hope that Nintendo had grown to take their online interface seriously.
Players had 4 distinct characters to choose from , each providing their own unique style and abilities. Each character also had the ability to gain experience, seeing as how High Voltage Software are fans of light-RPG elements. Couple that with it’s notion of being built from the ground up with cooperative multiplayer in mind and this was the type of game that the Wii, and it’s image, would’ve definitely benefited from.
It was originally slated for a fall 2010 release, which is the time period we’re at now. Obviously, the game hasn’t come out, and we don’t expect it out anytime soon as word is that it won’t be released till October of next year. If delays don’t plague the title once more, players will be faced with a completely new game, depending on which system they get it for of course, yes, it’s going multiplatform.
On February it was announced that the game will also be hitting the XBox 360, PS3, and PC, most likely to be in digital-download format. What’s the catch? Well, the ports of the original Wii version will be top-down shooters. It’ll still retain the characters and 4 player co-op hook that the original presented, albeit in a different gameplay style. One that belong to a pretty bloated genre, which isn’t a bad thing , but the Wii version actually served as something original for it’s platform. The Wii hadn’t seen anything like it, with the game’s release, Wii owners would have their version of a Left 4 Dead style game. It’s no mystery that I favor the Wii version over the ports, but I will be checking them all out and I’ll have a review for you guys when the time comes. Hopefully they stick with a Halloween 2011 release. You can view some of the thus released videos for the game below.
