There have been plenty of games games that use H.P. Lovecraft as an inspiration, but most of these are regular survival horror titles wherein you solve puzzles, deal with sanity meters and avoid monsters. There’s been the occasional Cthulhu RPG and probably some other quirky titles, sure, but this is truly the first time I have seen a Cthulhu turn-based strategy game.
Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land was just released on Steam and it has you command a team of investigators and soldiers as they fight off an army of ancient monsters that seem to predate humanity itself. It’s set in World War I and the game claims to feature a variety of authentic weapons, equipment and weapons to give your team, as well as a variety of skills they can learn. The developer behind this game is Red Wasp Design, which consists of people that have previously worked on Abomination: The Nemesis, another strategy game with horror influences. Seems like we’re in good hands.
The game was previously available on Android and iOS devices before been ported to PC, where it also released on Shiny Loot, Gamersgate and Indiecity before now arriving on Steam. I did a little research and found that user reviews on all these platforms were fairly positive about this game and according to the Steam page it even got some awards to show off.
